Playground-at-Tooby-Park

The former “Tooby Park” is a small area within the Southern Humboldt Community Park. It is located on the north side of Sprowel Creek Road just past the main SHCP entrance. Fourteen acres of the larger park , it encompasses a sunny picnic area and a modern fenced playground. It fronts access to a beach on the Eel River, and backs into a 7-acre mature redwood grove. Soon there will be a small sports practice area for local children’s beginning soccer and baseball teams. And plans are underway for a new barbecue pavilion. Tooby Park has been administered and maintained by SHCP since 2002.

Tooby Playground and Picnic Area

Tooby Playground and Picnic Area is across the road from the main, larger portion of the Park. It is readily accessible directly from the highway.  A playground for the kids, the river slowly easing by and picnic tables for your party make it a great place to spend a hot afternoon. Although not deep in this area, the river is suitable for wading and swimming. It is also possible to launch a kayak here.

Family parties (eg., birthday parties) don’t require a permit. If you plan a larger event, please check with the Park office first. A small use fee may apply.

Dogs must be on leash.

Day Use and Group Events at the Park

There are no fees for ordinary everyday use of the park by individuals.
If you would like to host a group event at the Park, please note there is a small day-use fee. These fees are used to help the park cover the additional costs incurred by group use. Those who cannot afford to pay will not be turned away for events like birthday parties and (no-alcohol) family gatherings. See Tooby Memorial Park. For more information regarding day-use / small events contact the park office (707) 923-2928.
