We are so thankful for the 3 dozen men and women that came out today and executed this much needed burn in an attempt to control invasive goat grass! Kai, Tanner, & Henri put a lot of time and energy into to the day- we are so lucky to have such knowledgeable & dedicated community leaders 🔥Prescribed Burn Planned for Southern Humboldt Grasslands –Thursday, June 12, 2025 at the Southern Humboldt Community Park, just outside Garberville.Fire operations will target up to 10 acres, weather and site conditions permitting. This project is a joint effort between the the Southern Humboldt Chapter of the Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association (HCPBA), Briceland Volunteer Fire Department, Telegraph Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, and other local cooperators. This late-spring prescribed fire focuses on controlling Barbed Goatgrass (Aegilops triuncialis), a non-native, invasive annual grass. Barbed Goatgrass is unpalatable to livestock and can injure wildlife by embedding sharp seeds into their mouths, eyes, and skin. Since first being identified in Southern Humboldt approximately four years ago, it has spread rapidly, displacing native grass species and threatening both ecological biodiversity and ranching livelihoods.Prescribed fire is a cost-effective and ecologically sound tool for reducing invasive species and maintaining the health of our region’s rare, native perennial grasslands.Smoke may be visible from Garberville and surrounding areas during burn operations. The project is fully permitted and carefully planned with air quality and public safety in mind. Fire crews will remain on site throughout the day to monitor and manage the burn.📸 Photo: Medusahead burn in Salmon Creek, June 2023 — a similar effort targeting invasive grasses. For more information please refer to;Watch Duty App (app.watchduty.org/)HCPBA and BVFD social mediawww.facebook.com/hcpbawww.instagram.com/humco_pba/www.facebook.com/Bricelandfire/www.instagram.com/bricelandvfd/ ...
